When Spirits Walk

Navajo deputy Sam Featherock is a rational man, but he cannot explain what he has seen. A wake of shattered bodies has left a bloody trail across the reservation within a week. The numbers of gruesome murders are accelerating at frightening speed. Is something supernatural involved or does someone want him to believe that to throw him off the trail?Tribal whispers say a Hopi witch is to blame—a Skinwalker, who roams the night and causes havoc and death, but Featherock believes he stalks a more inhuman foe, an ancient spirit that has broken into our world to exact vengeance for past crimes.Native legend and myth have become frighteningly real. Everything Featherock knows and loves is in danger from a mysterious entity with the most evil of intentions. Nothing will stop Featherock from solving the mystery, but during the lonely dark of night, he learns there is only one truth. You can never sleep until you know what walks the land behind you.

Starlight, Starbright. . . (Paperback)

August 21st, 2009

Starlight, Starbright. . .

Humor, mystery, adventure, tragedy, and love are all elements in the coming-of-age story of Sissy Bannister, a feisty, precocious girl, who meets life in a new town and a new school head-on. The pages are filled with stories of the diverse citizens that live in Redbud Grove, many of whom love, and are loved by, Sissy. Each chapter highlights different people, good and bad, old and young, rich and poor, that contribute to her education and help to mold the character of the strong, independent woman Sissy becomes. Watch Sissy as she comes to terms with economic differences among the people in her town. Smile at her wonder when she listens to adults discussing topics that leave her puzzled and looking for answers. Laugh aloud at the discoveries she makes when she and her friends peek through the window of a witch’s house. Cry with her at the loss of an unlikely friend. Share Sissy’s rage at the tragedy that befalls another ‘new girl’, who becomes one of Sissy’s best friends.Follow Sissy as she learns that small towns are not immune from bigotry, prejudice, bullies or injustice. Shake your head at her daring as she experiences a dangerous first crush, an intoxicating first kiss, and encounters life in all its fullness inside the boundaries and the rich, prairie outskirts of her little town, Redbud Grove.STARLIGHT, STARBRIGHT– covers the first fourteen-and-a-half years of Sissy Bannister’s life. Watch for the sequel, I WISH I MAY, I WISH, I MIGHT, that continues the saga of Sissy into adulthood, and on to what was written for her in the stars she so-loved to watch.

A Place To Stand: A Tale of the Peace River Country (Paperback)

A Place To Stand: A Tale of the Peace River Country

Liam Brennan, a young Irish immigrant to Canada, gets a job working as a surveyor in British Columbia’s Peace River Block during the years just prior to World War I. As the war unfolds in Europe, Liam and some of his fellows enlist in the Canadian Army and shortly find themselves in war-ravaged Western Europe. At the Battle of the Somme, Liam suffers a terrible wound and is captured by the German army and put into a POW camp in Belgium. Though grievously wounded, Liam, against all odds, survives the prisoner of war camp and is still there when the Armistice frees the POW’s. In the weeks following his release, he meets Marta, a young Belgian girl, and is befriended by her and her mother. After a brief visit to his family in Ireland, Liam returns to Belgium and marries Marta. During the long months of his confinement Liam had been strengthened by his resolve to survive the war and return to British Columbia and make a home there. He and Marta make their way half the distance around the globe to a place on the Peace River Liam remembered from his days as a surveyor before the war. The story of their lives in this new and pristine country takes the reader through the next half century. The Brennans struggle with isolation and hardship. Their children and later their grandchildren take up the quest to make a new and better life. Along the way, Liam and Marta must cope with the deaths of some of their children, fiercely cold winters and insect-plagued summers. They see the beautiful river they have settled by become a target for a huge government-built dam. Liam struggles with the dichotomy of his love for the unchanged river and his involvement in the building of the dam. The simple life Liam had foreseen becomes clouded by the growth of the area, elemental forces of nature, the attitudes of his own children and his own guilt as an agent of change.

About the Author
Jerry Secrist was born in California and grew up in Utah where he lived with his parents and siblings in a small farming community. He attended Utah State University and received a Batchelor of Science Degree in English Education in 1968. While teaching English and Journalism in Moses Lake, Washington, he became personally acquainted with British Columbia’s Peace River Country when he helped a friend haul farm machinery to the land where he was homesteading. In due course, he convinced his wife that they should move there. He was intrigued with the modern pioneer lifestyle that had and was still developing there and he wanted to be a part of it. In 1971, he and his wife with their two small sons moved to the community of Fort St. John, where he taught high school. They made many life-long friendships in those first months.Jerry’s many friends and acquaintances in the agricultural sector taught him to appreciate the challenges and difficulties of farming and ranching in a new and raw environment. As he witnessed their lives and taught their children in school, he marveled at their stoicism and pioneer spirit, many still living without the comforts of electricity or indoor plumbing. Pioneering was only two generations back in his own family background in the western U.S. and he vowed that when he had the time he would write their collective story.Jerry retired from teaching in 1999. He and his wife live in Charlie Lake where he raises and trains horses. He spends his summers in the mountains of the beautiful Peace River Country.

Essential Elements (Paperback)

Essential Elements

Another major earthquake has struck the San Francisco Bay Area. That is not unusual. It happens every few years in Northern and Southern California. If you live there, you know it’s going to happen. You’re never fully prepared, but each time you’re a little less surprised. Someday The Big One will strike, and the San Fernando Valley will end up in Anchorage, Alaska. Or some place. In about a million years. Hopefully, not sooner. Right now, the phones don’t work, there are no television broadcasts, and Stan Warner can’t locate most of his family, friends, and co-workers. Some of the worst aspects of a major disaster are lack of information and immobility. Don’t know; can’t find out. Modern, instantaneous communication has spoiled most Americans and a large part of the world. Californians are the worst. An inability to know or to go and find out can be torturous, even if the information is wrong and the effort is pointless. In a disaster almost nothing can be more difficult than being forced to wait. Stan Warner is being forced to wait. For the phones to start working, for the television stations to return to the air, for the inevitable aftershocks to begin. Later, he can wait for the special newspaper editions, magazine coverage, TV movies, and books. People love disasters. From a distance or if they’ve survived them. But waiting can be agony if you cannot avoid the unfortunate memories of mistakes made, wrong directions taken, what you had, and what you might have had. If you dwell too long on the evil you did, you may never recall the good. Stand Warner is sitting, waiting, and remembering. Luckily, the phone finally rings. Campus Security needs him at the college to make a key decision in the wake of the afternoon’s tremor. His choice will have far ranging effects on the environment of the local valley and the financial integrity of the school.

One family\’s 30 year odyssey! A father\’s obsession! A mother\’s nightmare! A son\’s hell!

About the Author
Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1948, in 1956 her family migrated west to Colorado in a 1955 Plymouth. This journey inspired many of the visions that plagued Sam Dodd during his adventure west. Sam\’s character was loosely based on a neighbor living behind her first home in Colorado. During the “Cold War”, this individual isolated his family from the neighbors after building a bomb shelter in his back yard. Spending most of her youth and adult life in Colorado where she met and married her life long soul mate Raymond Otstot, and raised their daughter Dawn. Lorraine had a 30-year career in retail advertising. Having the attention span of a two-year-old, no project held her attention long. Alas, that is why it took over 18 years to complete this story. It was written. . .re-written and edited many times over through hundreds of sleepless nights lying in bed. Writing has become a salvation to this hopeless insomniac.

From Publishers Weekly
First met in Burke’s excellent mystery, The Neon Rain, Dave Robicheaux is a driven mandriven by his constant battle with alcoholism; by memories of his past as a detective on the New Orleans police force; by his need for order; by his obsession with the seedy, aberrant side of New Orleans life. Trying to put his own life together again, Dave has married Annie and now runs a small fishing rental business in the Louisiana bayou. When he and Annie witness the crash of a small plane, in which four peopleobviously illegal aliensdie, and only a little girl survives, Robicheaux is drawn to the trail of a network of crimes that suggests a Central American dope-running ring operated with the connivance of federal agents. Violence ensues, and Robicheaux, no stranger to tragedy, must confront it again when Annie becomes a victim. Haunted by guilt, deeply depressed, in constant danger, Robicheaux trusts no one, including the cops, for he knows that they too, are capable of skirting the law. Burke beautifully evokes New Orleans and the mysterious bayous, and he skillfully depicts the different lifestyles that distinguish the Gulf region. Robicheaux is a complex character whose integrity and high principles are always in conflict with the darker side of human nature. This is a mystery fans will savor for its ruminating intelligence and graceful prose as well as for its heart-stopping suspense.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
The Cajun hero of The Neon Rain returns in a very intense and atmospheric, if not obsessive, story of personal revenge. Former homicide cop Dave Robicheaux, now proprietor of a bait and boat rental business on the Louisiana bayou, rescues a terrified illegal immigrant girl from a small plane that crashes into the Gulf. The other four passengers die, but when newspapers report only three, Dave decides to investigate. His first-person narrative provides character insight, immediacy, and authentic glimpses into a disappearing way of life. For most collections. REKCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.
